Nintendo Wii

July 11th, 2007

The Nintendo Wii it seems, puts pay to the concerns in recent years over the inactivity in children due to their interest in video games consoles. The Wii console really sets itself apart from the rest with its revolutionary motion sensitive controller, which actually requires movement in order to play the games.

The Nintendo Wii comes with the game Wii Sports, which includes tennis, baseball, bowling, golf and boxing. In tennis you’ll be swinging the remote as if it were a tennis racket and flicking it up to toss the ball into the air with a quick swing to serve. The other Wii Sports games work in a similar way simulating controller movements for like movements onscreen. Boxing however is the only Wii Sports game that uses the nunchuk attachment and is the most physically exhausting game of them all. In order to hit your opponent in the head or body, you will have to aim high or low with your swings. There are three different activities with each game. In training mode, you’ll participate in random challenges, after which you will be assigned a fitness age, based on your performance. Sound familiar? The Nintendo DS game, Brain Training comes to mind…a physical version perhaps?

The important thing here is that gamers are becoming more physically active without even realising it, so given this ‘physical’ nature of the Nintendo Wii, I wouldn’t be suprised if parents rushed out to buy the Wii just to get their kids off the sofa!

Another great thing about the Nintendo Wii is that it appeals not only to children and teens but to adults too so its something the whole family can enjoy.

Could the Nintendo Wii revolutionize the way we play video games in the future? It will be interesting to see what Nintendo’s competitors come up with next - this could be a tough one to beat!

Nintendo Gamecube

July 11th, 2007

The Nintendo Gamecube was released back in 2001 and was very popular for years. But now they are no longer manufactured and can be hard to find. Many stores no longer carry them. So how do you find a Gamecube? How much should you pay? And what should you look for when shopping? Below are five things to keep in mind to make your Gamecube shopping experience as pain free as possible.

1. Don’t Spend More than $50 Total - The prices vary from one store to the next, but you can find Gamecube’s for less than $50 even with shipping included. Many stores sell them for only a little bit less than their final retail price of $99. If you spend a little bit more time, you can definitely save yourself a lot of money.

2. Buy Used - Gamecube’s stopped being made in 2006 so stores don’t carry new systems anymore. Thankfully, Nintendo built the Gamecube very well so hardly any have reliability issues. The Gamecube isn’t like the original Nintendo NES where you have to blow into all old systems and have just the right technique to get it working.

3. Don’t Shop in Retail Stores - You will most likely be wasting your time. All major retails and most used video game stores have stopped selling Gamecube systems. They have switched over to the next generation of systems and don’t have room for the Gamecube anymore. The best place to find a Gamecube in a store would be local independent video game retailers or pawn shops. Most retailers only sell a few Gamecube games but don’t sell the systems anymore.

4. Shop Online - The best place to find a Gamecube is from an online stores or Ebay. A search of Google or comparison shopping sites will bring up quite a few available systems. And like everything else in the world, you can find Gamecube systems on Ebay too. Be careful when shopping online to make sure you don’t over pay for shipping though. Many retailers have a low list price of $29.99 for the console, only to charge $30-40 for shipping.

5. Watch What is Included - Out of the box the Gamecube came with one controller, an AV cable, and an AC Adaptor. All three of these are needed for the system to work so be sure any websites where you shop say what is included. You don’t want to think you got a good deal on a system only to find it didn’t include a controller, which will cost you another $15 to buy separately.

If you keep these five things in mind when shopping for your Gamecube you should be able to find a great deal and save yourself a lot of hassle. Now go find your Gamecube and start enjoying one of the greatest systems ever made.
